CONCEPT:

Although imaginary, St. Marnock Engine Shed has very good reason to exist. The Ayrshire town of Kilmarnock was, in steam days, an extremely important junction on the former G&SWR system. It had two routes from Glasgow, one of them forming the Anglo-Scottish main line to Dumfries, Carlisle, Leeds and London St. Pancras. There were branch lines to Darvel and Ardrossan and also an important route to Ayr and on to Stranraer.

Kilmarnock was served by Hurlford engine shed, but this was situated to the south some three miles away.  With all the express passenger and freight through Kilmarnock it would have been such a benefit to have an engine shed close to the station to provide rapid servicing and turnround of the locomotives using the main lines. St. Marnock provides that.
